The two main constituent parties of the national unity government show fairly different positions which indicated a significant gap with regards to several issues recently taken by their coalition.Couple of months ago, prime minister Ranil Wickramasinghe made a positive ly growing state in the term of international involvement of the post war accountability process,while the president expressed his negative view on the matter.
similarly, at the point of concerning the fate of central bank governer, the both constituent parties made a wide gap in their own positions.While SLFP opposed his re -appointment ,UNP has expressed it's confidence in the governer's contribution to the economy and financial stratergies as a member of the government team.To continue to cooperate on important issues as they have been doing so far for the past and a half year since the election of new coalition.Tow parties will have to find a mutually accepted solution.
In the no-confidence motion against the finance minister ,the unity government showed that the government's majority in the parliament remains secured.But the joint opposition failed to get the support of SLFP members who have joined the government.However the weakness of joint opposition was manifested by the extent of their defeat of no confidence motion they had presented with an appearence of confidence . In the circumstance of former coalition partners of joint opposition WC and EPDP have joined the government and their key leaders have been arrested on the charges of financial frauds ,their appears to be a fall in the public campaign.
In this no confidence motion, blighted hope of the joint opposition was that as the long standing rival of the SLFP with UNP , the financial minister of UNP would be defeated by SLFP members.However , president Maithreepala Sirisena was able to exert his influence over his party members who had joined the government.In the duration of no confidence motion, president also stayed within his chamber which clearly showed president's commitment for the national unity government.This public display of the president would force not to make negative votes which was the key fact to defeat the joint opposition 's no confidence motion with a large majority.
The solid majority gives by the combination of two main political parties of national unity government which enforce political and constitutional reforms as non-racist leaders. president and prime minister grasped the trust of Tamil and Muslim minorities such a trust and goodwill that exists between them at the higherst level of polity provides an example to the people .Meanwhile the impunity and corruption during the period of Rajapaksa government are still being investigated but above inquiries be proceeded slower than expected , especially in the court of public opinion .The SLFP members of national unity government were also a part of previous Rajapaksa government which stands accused for corruption under these circumstances.There is public speculation that the slow progress of praud investigation is due to natural reluctance of those whose past conduct to be investigated to assess their indictment for crimes any easier.Other hand, slow pace of investigations is due to a stuck between those in power and those are not.
However,In order to develop the good confidence in the public, two of the key parties of national unity government must be in the same position despite the challenge mounted by joint opposition.SLFP voters expect a government that is totally SLFP.There is a fracture within the SLFP among one side, who want to form their own government without any formal UNP participation and the other side, the members who want to proceed unity government.This trend is possible to weaken the unity government with coming local government election in near future.
In the facts of good governce, as well as checking the issues of impunity and corruption the two leaders of national unity government should lead their basic parameters with a mutual agreement and closely consulted frame work.The previous close coordination and cooperation in the unity government appears to be diminished in recent time which makes threats and affects stability of the coalition.
The UNP part of the government focuses it's attention on international community for seeking to cater to their concerns in the hope of international aid and investments that can heave the economy to a new paradise.But SLFP ,part of government is focusing on the local community which is more integrated on issues of social welfare and national sovereignity'
