In 1977,former executive president J.R.J 's cabinet was consisted of three key ministerial portfolios as Ranasinghe Premadasa,Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake.  J.R.J  as an astute politician to the core used  this intra-party rivalry for the benifit of government while it introduced a series of tuff economic ,financial and political reformations within the period of one year.As a potential head of the estate, J.R.J placed three vital projects of his government under these key ministerial portfolios.

As a new comer to the parliament ,Athulathmudali was given a cabinet ministerial portfolio and his famous project of Mahapola fund which encouraged the estate's higher education sector for more than three decades.University students from drastic rural areas were greatly benefited from Mahapola fund over the past 30 years in his systematically planned strategy.Later ,he also held the position of defense minister ship while it was the the initial stage of the Tamil militants.Athulathmudali kept his trust on the task of crashing tamil militia in a military action.He also achieved very remarkable progress with the vadamarachchi operation despite his efforts were hampered by external intrusion of Indian government in 1987.However it enabled to confined LTTE militants in to a tiny strip of Srilanka.General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Wijaya wimalaratne gained immense popularity as capable leaders of this operation.

Gamini Dissanayake who secured his Nuwaraeliya seat esily at the general election in 1977,was appointed as the minister of Mahaweli development.A flagship project of the JRJ government was kept on the shoulder of Dissanayake which was expected to take 30 years,was completed within 6 years as a result of his excellent leadership.This project was focused on irrigation,hydro-power generation, agriculture, town designs and country development while triggering a quantum leap in term of economic,social,financial and cultural development via Mahaweli villages.Eccept his role at the minister of Mahaweli development,he held the position of chairmenship of Srilanka Cricket board around 1980.In this season , Srilanka gained test status of cricket.In 1987, while JRJ was trapped by Rajive Gandhi government when he was forced to sign indo-Lanka bilateral peace agreement under tumultuous circumstances which brought the 18 th amendment and it's practicle version of setting up of provincial councils as a solution to the north and east conflict

Meanwhile ,Ranasinghe Premadasa was kept on the other flagship of JRJ'S government which undertook the task of sheltering the poor.Janasaviya which was  equipped to help the poor,A foster parent scheme,the Gam udawa project by which he attempted to enhance the social,economic indicators of Srilankan social system.The mobile secretariat whereby he took the central government bureaucracy to the peasants.The tower hall foundation for drama and musics and pension schemes for the benefits of elder artists.

Many political analysts believe that the country at the large benefited from the three prime ministerial aspirants in JRJ cabinet in those days
